This course will look at British drama in production from varied time periods, including multiple plays by Shakespeare and plays adapted from novels for younger readers. Students will read and discuss six to eight plays and novels; have the opportunity to see these texts in productions in London or Stratford-upon-Avon; experience a day-long workshop with the pre-eminent Shakespeare company in the world (the Royal Shakespeare Company); tour the Globe Theatre and experience a workshop there; and tour many other London and Stratford sites.
LIT 367 will be of particular interest to students majoring in secondary education English/language arts, secondary education history/social studies, elementary or other education, English liberal arts, and journalism. Each student will come away with a journal reflecting on multiple experiences for potential professional use. In addition, an education major may complete the course with a lesson plan and a small bulletin board; an English liberal arts major may research and write a conference paper; students of other majors will consult the faculty about a professionally-appropriate project.
Testimonials:
– Nicole Magno (English Secondary Education major)
The British Theatre course not only allowed me the rare opportunity of learning in an environment that is rich with history and culture, but also gave me the chance to experience literature in an exciting and fun way. London always had something to do or see, whether it was getting lost in numerous museums, exploring London streets to take in the beauty of the architecture or finding platform 9¾ at King’s Cross. As a student, I learned so much because I was immersed in context and captivated by how literature can come to life!
